The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) is a department that works behind-the-scenes to make sure all of the tools used in surgeries are sterile. Learn more about what a day in the life is like in this department:

Who are Kenny and Abby?

Kenny and Abby are Xenex robots. The technology in the robots has been scientifically proven to be effective against dangerous pathogens, including C. diff, influenza and staph bacteria, including MRSA. To disinfect a room after standard discharge cleaning processes are complete, staff from the surgery department or environmental services wheel Kenny into the room, place it in a centralized location, begin the automated system and exit the room. The Xenex UV light disinfection system uses ultraviolet (UV-C) light to destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi and bacterial spores.
