Pregnancy and Postpartum Therapy in Dubuque
A woman's body experiences many changes during and after pregnancy. Our physical therapy team can help remedy some of the most common changes the body goes through by offering individualized exercises and treatment plans tailored to meet the specific concerns and issues of each patient.
Prepartum patients may benefit from physical therapy by addressing pregnancy pain, strengthening the pelvic floor in preparation for childbirth, along with other concerns. Patients in the postpartum period may benefit from physical therapy by addressing pain present from delivery (vaginal or cesarean), incontinence, weakness of the pelvic floor, positioning during breastfeeding and more.
Through pregnancy and postpartum therapy, you will learn:
• How to decrease pain and stress on your body when changing positions during pregnancy and postpartum periods with an emphasis on breastfeeding positioning.
• Proper techniques on how to stretch and strengthen your muscles to support the changing body structure.
• Ways to mobilize joints and soft tissue appropriately during pregnancy, thus reducing the pain from your changing body structure.
• How to use an SI belt during pregnancy, which decreases stress on the body, and modalities in postpartum, which decrease pain and improve scar mobility.
Women, who are pregnant or who have recently given birth and are interested in learning more about how physical therapy can beneficial, are asked to speak with their doctor. A physician referral is required to begin therapy.
