Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OTM) is a treatment offered by doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs). This type of doctor receives special training on the musculoskeletal system, which includes a person's bones, spine, muscles and nerves. More importantly, the training addresses how the musculoskeletal system can be manipulated to address pain complaints. OMT can relieve pain in muscles and joints, as well as promote the body's healing process. OMT can be used to address pain from the following conditions:
- Muscle aches and pains
- Joint aches and pains
- Carpal tunnel
- Sinus issues
OMT treatment technique involves using the body's natural resistance and motion from breathing along with pressure applied by the hand to ease muscles. The treatment can be done to minimize a pain complaint or used as a monthly or bimonthly maintenance technique.
