Kati Huffman | Patient Stories at UnityPoint Health - Des Moines

Kati's Testimonial

Kati Huffman was happy to be in the hands of experts when she started experiencing complications during her third trimester of pregnancy. Kati began to suffer seizures when she was only 30 weeks pregnant. Scared and worried about her health and that of the baby, she turned to the experts at UnityPoint Health - Des Moines - including Penn Avenue OB/GYN, the Methodist Perinatal Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

The providers at Penn Avenue OB/GYN have delivered two of Kati's children, including Parker in 2009 and Layla in April 2011.The following is a testimonial from Kati written in her own words.

Getting to Know the Doctors and Staff

Right away I felt very safe and comfortable at Penn Avenue OB/GYN. I always got in right away to see the providers during each of my visits and they also made sure I had all of my questions answered. I really felt like part of the family. Each staff member, including the doctors, nurses and front office staff, were all awesome! It amazed me with how thorough they were when explaining any tests or procedures and they always called right away with my test results.

I realized how special they all were when I began to experience seizures during my last few months of pregnancy. Without Dr. Rodriguez going the extra step to make sure my baby and I were safe and healthy, I'm not sure the outcome would have been as positive. They truly go the extra length and make every effort to ensure the safety of their patients.

A High-risk Pregnancy

I started having seizures in 2007 when I was six months pregnant with had my son Conner. The reason for the seizures is still unknown but the only time I have them is when I'm pregnant. I began having seizures during my most recent pregnancy during week 30. I was admitted to the hospital after having a seizure at work. The providers at Penn Avenue OB/GYN were with me every step of the way and referred me to Dr. Karen Drake at the Methodist Perinatal Center.

The seizures themselves didn't hurt, but the after effects on my body were tough and I always got bad headaches afterwards. The physicians had constant monitors on me while I was in the hospital to make sure there were no adverse effects on the baby. Luckily, everything seemed to be ok and they continued to make sure that her heart rate was stable. The physicians at Penn Avenue OB/GYN were in constant communication with Dr. Drake to make sure they were doing everything for me and my baby to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery. Dr. Rodriquez stayed in contact often to make sure that I was getting the non-stress tests at least twice a week.

My Wonderful Experience at Iowa Lutheran Hospital

I can't say enough about the wonderful care I received at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. I loved Lutheran and got to know the staff very well. I spent three weeks there before my delivery off and on due to the seizures. The Iowa Lutheran Maternity Center became a home away from home. The nurses were always there right away if you needed them. I always felt safe at Lutheran and just liked the personalized atmosphere. It was exactly what I needed during the tough parts of my pregnancy.

During week 37 my daughter decided it was time to make her entrance! My beautiful baby girl, Layla, was born in April, 2011, via C-section at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. We were so happy to have Dr. Rodriquez there to deliver Layla and the entire Maternity Center staff was amazing. I remember sitting in the surgery room getting prepped for the C-section and the nurses were being so kind and comforting. One of them came up to me while I was getting the spinal and told me that she was there to make sure my little girl received the care she needed. She told me she was an NICU nurse from Blank Children's Hospital and I just remember knowing at that point that my daughter would be okay. Thanks to Dr. Rodriquez and all of the nurses that were there for the delivery, Layla was born happy and healthy - weighing 8 pounds!

The Right Choice for Me

If anyone ever asks about where I go for OB care, I'm always happy to share my experience with UnityPoint Health - Des Moines. The providers and staff at Penn Avenue OB/GYN were there for me during a stressful time and I can't thank them enough. I was reminded again of the great care they provide after my daughter was born. When I went in for my two week check-up, everyone in the office, including the doctors and nurses, wanted to see Layla and ask how everything was going. They had been there for me throughout my pregnancy and I am so thankful to all of them!
