2019 Rally Against Cancer - Facts and Figures

by -

The 19th Annual Rally Against Cancer was held Saturday, January 26 and together, 535 attendees raised more than $300,000 to help ensure that in the fight against cancer. We are One Team. One Dream.

Proceeds from this event support the John Stoddard Cancer Center Oncology Navigator Program. The Oncology Navigator team consists of specially trained nurses and social workers who help patients and families navigate through the cancer journey and provide ongoing support beyond the last treatment to help survivors live the best life possible.

This year’s speaker and newest member of Team Stoddard was Vince Papale, former NFL player and colon cancer survivor. As portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in the movie, Invincible, Vince Papale never played college football and at the age of 30 participated in a citywide tryout with his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. In spite of his age and lack of experience, Vince’s determination and sheer effort not only caught the eyes of the coaches, but earned him a full-time position with the Eagles from 1976-78, making him the oldest rookie to ever play in the NFL without college experience.

Vince spent the afternoon meeting patients, families and staff members on the oncology inpatient unit on Powel 3.  He took extra time and care to speak with each patient, making sure they knew they were not alone. Throughout his story, Vince taught us the importance of never giving up and to Dream Big.
