School of Nursing Alumni Associations

Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing

The Lutheran School of Nursing was established at the same time Iowa Lutheran Hospital opened in 1914. The first class of 16 student nurses graduated in 1917. In those first few years, student nurses lived in the hospital building on one of the upper floors. In 1922, a School of Nursing building was constructed just west of the hospital building along the Des Moines River. The last class, with 53 students, graduated the year the school was closed in 1978. A total of 1,880 top notch diploma nurses went on to careers across the globe, taking with them their compassion and their quality bedside nursing skills.

Iowa Methodist School of Nursing

The Iowa Methodist Hospital (IMH) and Nurses' Training School opened January 16, 1901 at Iowa Methodist Hospital. The first class of four nurses graduated in 1903. Training was extended from two to three years with the first diploma program class graduating in 1907. To meet the growing need, a dedicated building was constructed on the hospital campus and the name was changed to the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing (IMSN). The school graduated its last class in 1999, concluding its service after educating and preparing more than 4,400 of the best nurses in the nation. The IMSN Alumni Association are dedicated to continuing the legacy of learning by convening its members, sharing information and supporting the ongoing education of its members and their descendants.
