Melissa's Weight Loss Success Story

“When I started this journey almost three years ago, I had tried every diet, exercise plan and pill known to man. I had reached my all-time high of 340 pounds. I was lost and had no idea where to turn. Then, after doing some research, I found UnityPoint Clinic Weight Loss – West Des Moines.

From the first phone call to now, I have never felt more comfortable at a doctors office than I have there. Dr. Cahalan is welcoming, caring and listens to everything you have to say. There are so many wonderful nurses, dietitians and doctors to make you feel like you are not alone. Brittany Beal is a dietitian that I have had the greatest pleasure working with. She is fantastic! She truly cares about you and how you are doing.

My starting weight on November 11, 2017 was 338 pounds. My insurance required one visit per month for six months. My surgery date was April 17, 2018 and I was 323 pounds. The first year I lost 100 pounds. I went from a tight size 30–32 to a Juniors 11/Medium.

I exercise daily, get my protein and make sure I take all the vitamins. I’ve run 10 5Ks, each with a better time. I am at a stable weight of 187.5–190 pounds; this is where my body is happy and I am comfortable.

On June 19, 2020, I had plastic surgery to remove the 10 pounds of extra skin that had become such a problem. I am still in recovery now. It is hard work, and some days are better than others, but the rewards will keep you going.

Rewards like sitting in a chair comfortably, not using an airplane seatbelt extender, running/waking without losing your breath and being healthy only to name a few. Whatever your moments are, they are a result of you working so hard to make this journey yours!”
