Resident Afternoon Conferences
A core curriculum in general surgery conference is covered once a week on Tuesday afternoon from 5-7 p.m. This is a resident driven conference where clinical and surgical topics are addressed. Both residents and faculty participate in presentations.
Thursday Morning Conferences
There are two hours of conferences each week on Thursday mornings. The first hour is devoted to a combined general surgery and trauma morbidity and mortality conference, which incorporates cases from all surgical education sites. The second hour includes grand rounds presentations from internal faculty and visiting professors; chief rounds in which the chief residents present a comprehensive review of their previous four months experience; complex case presentations in which selected complex surgical cases are presented in a comprehensive fashion; journal club in which selected journal articles are presented and discussed; indications conferences where discussion of a symptom or particular circumstance indicates the advisability or necessity of specific surgical treatment or procedure; decisions conference where faculty and resident participants are polled using an audience response system on current topics in general surgery and sub-specialties and surgery section meetings in which faculty and residents are updated on the systems based issues of participation within the medical staff process and surgery pharmacological updates.
Tuesday afternoon's at 4pm residents meet with our trauma services faculty and staff to review trauma videos. As a level one trauma center, there are regular trauma rounds and trauma morbidity and mortality reviews.
Throckmorton Surgical Society
Each spring, the Throckmorton Surgical Society which is the Iowa Methodist Surgical Residency Alumni, presents a full day post-graduate course featuring nationally known speakers and focusing on a current critical topic in general surgery. Additional conferences are held over the noon hour with a weekly presentation of tumor board, a bi-weekly colorectal cancer conference and a monthly core competency based lecture series, which includes residents from the other residency programs.
