(DES MOINES, Iowa – February 7, 2018) Eric Crowell, President and Chief Executive Officer of
UnityPoint Health® – Des Moines, has announced he will retire July 1. Over a thirty-seven-year
career in health care, seventeen years in his current position, Crowell has led in Iowa, Illinois,
and nationally, and he has been an active volunteer in his community.
Crowell is a Des Moines native who graduated from East High School, holds an undergraduate
degree from Iowa State University and a Master’s in Hospital Administration from the
University of Minnesota. Before returning to Des Moines and UnityPoint Health in 2001,
Crowell served as President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Trinity (formerly known as Trinity
Health system) in Moline, Illinois.

Crowell’s service goes well beyond the medical campuses of UnityPoint Health. He has served
on numerous boards, including the Boards of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Des Moines
University, Des Moines Performing Arts, Grand View University and the Alliance of Independent
Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC). Crowell received the distinguished Citation of Achievement
Award from the College of Business at Iowa State University in 2011, is an East High School
Distinguished Alumni, and was named a Distinguished Eagle Scout by the National Council of
the Boy Scouts of America.
During Crowell’s tenure, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines has focused on improving the quality
of care and access to care in every segment of the market. A few of the notable
accomplishments Crowell has led include:
- Merging Partners in Health with Iowa Health Physicians to create UnityPoint Clinic,
Central Iowa’s leading clinic network.
- Building Methodist West Hospital to meet a growing community and expand hospital
options in Central Iowa.
? Growing UnityPoint Health’s presence in Ankeny culminating with the opening of
Ankeny Medical Park.
- Opening new Emergency Departments at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Iowa Methodist
Medical Center, Blank Children’s Hospital and Methodist West Hospital.
- Expanding LifeFlight – Central Iowa’s first air medical transport – with two locations
including a base in Fort Dodge.
- Growing the assets of the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Foundation to $171 million
while providing over $113 million of philanthropy to UnityPoint Health – Des Moines
hospitals to mitigate patient care costs and provide critical services that are not typically
- Forming the Iowa EMS Alliance, a public/private partnership between the City of West
Des Moines and UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, for ground ambulance services.
- Meeting the rigorous standards for DNV GL - International Healthcare Accreditation and
being the first hospitals in Iowa to attain ISO 9000 certification, ensuring consistent
? Increasing the rural hospital network from four to six hospitals as well affiliating with
Grinnell Regional Medical Center and Eyerly Ball Community Mental Health Services.
- Achieving Level 1 Trauma center status for Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
- Growing the medical residency and teaching programs to ensure the future of
healthcare with knowledgeable and skilled medical professionals.

UnityPoint Health will conduct a search for UnityPoint Health – Des Moines’ next President and
CEO. The search will include internal and external candidates and will be led by Board Chair,
Brad Brody. No timeline for naming Eric Crowell’s successor has been announced.
