IOeRT - Is it for me?
If you have early stage breast cancer and your breast can be preserved with limited surgery and targeted radiation, you may be a good candidate for IOeRT. Electron-based Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IOeRT) is an advanced cancer treatment available for early stage breast cancer and is available at St. Luke's Cancer Care through an international clinical trial.
The first step is a one-on-one consultation with a St. Luke's care coordinator, a nurse specializing in cancer. Labs and tests may be done. The care coordinator will schedule three appointments for you to meet with a:
- Radiation oncologist
- Medical oncologist
Your multidisciplinary team work together to answer your questions, to review the risks and benefits of IOeRT and assure IOeRT is the best treatment for you.
If IOeRT is right for you, the next step is surgery.
IOeRT is one procedure, done in the operating room, combining surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and an initial dose of concentrated radiation. St. Luke's is the only hospital in Cedar Rapids to offer IOeRT technology.
Follow-up daily radiation treatments needed after surgery are about half, significantly reducing overall treatment time for patients.
