The Child Protection Center staff is committed to increasing
awareness of child abuse issues in the community through events and
educational programs. Several programs already exist, but the staff can
design a program to meet your training needs. Fees vary based upon the
presentation and the audience.

Mandatory Reporter Training
This course is approved by the Iowa Department of Public Health and
meets the two-hour training requirement for professionals required to
report suspected child abuse in the state of Iowa. Topics include:
- Overview of child abuse issues
- Signs and symptoms of abuse
- State guidelines for reporting
- Follow-up on reports
Physician Training
An intensive one-on-one consultation for physicians/nurses conducting
medical examinations of children alleged to be victims of child sexual
abuse. Recommend three days of training. Topics include:
- Psychosocial dynamics of child abuse
- Medical evaluation of suspected victims of abuse
- Collection of forensic specimens
- Colposcopy
- Interpretations of physical findings
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Expert witness testimony
- Pertinent literature
Fee: $500.00 per day
Coordinator Training
A one-on-one consultation designed for program coordinators in the
process of establishing child protection centers (child advocacy
centers, etc.). Recommend three days of training. Topics include:
- Planning and equipping a new center
- Funding and billing
- Coordination of team and working with the community
- Interviewing procedures and protocols
- Intake, record keeping, and statistical information
- Medical protocol
- Patient documentation
- Lab and specimen protocol
- Confidentiality
- Quality assurance
- Development of prevention programs
- Expert witness training
- National Children's Alliance (NCA) membership standards
Fee: $300.00 per day
Forensic/Interviewer Training
One-on-one training with a highly experienced interviewer to help the
participant become familiar with the field of forensic interviewing.
Three days of training recommended. Topics include:
- Preparing a child for an interview and exam
- Conducting a forensically sound interview
- The use of "props" during interviews
- Multi-disciplinary teams
- Team role identification
- Systems intervention
- Expert witness testimony
Fee: $250 per day
