About Pediatric Endocrinology
Endocrinology is the study hormones. Hormones travel via blood and control important functions of the body by delivering signals in between cells and tissues. Thyroid hormones is one such example that is produced by the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid is underactive and is not able to produce sufficient thyroid hormones. The effects of an underactive thyroid gland is fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold temperature, constipation, dry skin and in children it can cause problems with growth. In babies, thyroid hormones are essential for the brain to develop normally. Good news is that this can be detected with blood testing and treated adequately.
