Hospice Volunteer On-boarding

Volunteers are essential to the compassionate and personalized care provided by UnityPoint Hospice. On-boarding as a UnityPoint Hospice volunteer is much like on-boarding as an employee. Under Iowa law, hospice volunteers must undergo 14 hours of training. This includes the online module below to describe volunteering in our inpatient unit at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's Hospital. Additional training includes live/online sessions describing hospice history and philosophy, the dying process, family dynamics and the other members of the hospice care team. Other online modules will discuss privacy issues, the volunteer's role in hospice and more. Hospice volunteer training concludes with sessions describing volunteering in the inpatient unit, visiting a patient in the community and how to document a visit. Orientation sessions take place periodically during the year. Hospice volunteers are subject to multiple background checks during orientation. The following steps guide you to becoming a UnityPoint Hospice volunteer.

1. Complete the Online Application

If you have not yet applied to volunteer, please complete a volunteer application here.

2. Schedule an Interview with the Hospice Volunteer Coordinator

Once you have submitted an application, call the Hospice volunteer coordinator at (319) 368-5632 to schedule an interview, either online or in-person. Interviews last about 45 minutes. This is an opportunity for the volunteer coordinator to meet you, describe hospice volunteering in more detail, ask about your experiences and interests and your reasons for wanting to volunteer, and to learn what times you are available to volunteer.

3. Schedule a Health Screening

The health screening will consist of paperwork, an assessment and a blood draw. You will need to bring a copy of your immunizations. If you are under 18, bring your parent or guardian.

4. Complete the Following Module and Test

The module below will familiarize you with our corporate partner, Volunteer Services at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's Hospital, as well as with volunteering in the hospital, where our inpatient unit is located.
