Cancer Treatment

Our cancer center is a part of Children's Oncology Group (COG). COG is one of a handful of research institutions dedicated solely to pediatric cancer treatment research. Through COG, we are able to offer the latest in cancer treatment protocols and clinic trial participation. Because of our involvement with COG, we are able to offer the same treatments available at other major institutions across our country.

About COG

Today, more than 90% of 13,500 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States are cared for at COG member institutions. COG's unparalleled collaborative efforts provide the information and support needed to answer important clinical questions in the fight against cancer.

COG has nearly 100 active clinical trials open at any given time. These trials include front-line treatment for many types of childhood cancers, studies aimed at determining the underlying biology of these diseases, and trials involving new and emerging cancer treatments, supportive care and survivorship.

COG research has turned children's cancer from a virtually incurable disease 50 years ago to one with a combined 5-year survival rate of 80% today.  Our goal is to cure all children and adolescents with cancer, reduce the short and long-term complications of cancer treatments, and determine the causes and find ways to prevent childhood cancer.

While we are able to offer a wide variety of treatment options and services, there are some cancers that are extremely rare and require the collaboration with other doctors. When presented with a unique cancer, our team works closely with other institutions to offer our young patients the best in cancer treatment options. Some collaborations may require families to travel to another medical facility, while some may be able to be completed here in Des Moines.

Institutions we are proud to collaborate with include:

  • Moffit Cancer Center
  • University of Minnesota Massonic Children's Hospital
  • St. Jude Research Hospital
  • Children's Memorial Hospital
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering
  • Mayo Clinic
