About This ProviderPrint

Why did you become a dietitian?

I love what a complement the dietitian can be to the interdisciplinary team. Not only does an RDN have a firm clinical knowledge of varying disease states, medications and drug-nutrient interactions, but we also have both a biochemical and practical knowledge of food and how it should be prepared. No matter if your child is in critical need or is growing and developing normally, balanced nutrition promotes healing and/or prevention of chronic disease.

What motivates you each day?

A rewarding part of my job is putting families at ease in difficult situations. For example, if a child has just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, celiac disease, or needs a G-tube placed, I try to tailor education in a way that can make families understand and feel more comfortable.

Nutrition and diet are critical elements to management of Cystic Fibrosis. As the dietitian of the Blank Cystic Fibrosis Center, I get to work very closely with families. Seeing their children healthy from visit to visit puts a smile on my face.

What is the most important message you would like to share with your patients?

The foods we choose to nourish our bodies are entirely individual. Our family traditions, culture, and upbringing all influence how we feed our families. As a dietitian, it is not my job to judge these customs and choices, but rather to support and guide you to ensure your child is receiving a balanced and healthy diet that allows him or her to thrive.

Any fun facts that you would like to share?

I am trained as a classical violist and have a degree in music performance. I perform regularly with the Des Moines Symphony and enjoy listening to music of all genres. In my spare time, I enjoy staying physically active by weightlifting, practicing yoga, and dancing.
