To register for the ACLS Renewal Class please contact Melanie Herman at Melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org

Purpose and Audience:

To provide renewal certification in ACLS by the American Heart Association with an added component specific to the obstetric patient.

Pre-Course Requirements:

  • You may access the Pre-Course Assessment by going to www.heart.org/eccstudent and the code to use is acls15.
  • Successful completion of the Pre-Course Assessment with 70% or higher is required.  Please print your score and fax (515-241-6732) or email (Melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org) to Melanie Hermann one week prior to class time.
  • If not received one week prior, you will be dropped from the class and billed a $25 administrative fee. It is essential that you bring your AHA ACLS Provider Manual to class.

Continuing Education Credits:

No continuing education credit will be awarded for this course.

The American Heart Association will issue a card verifying the successful completion of the course. Expiration of the verification will occur two years from the date of issue.


  • Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients.
  • Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use.
  • Recognize respiratory arrest.
  • Perform early management of respiratory arrest.
  • Discuss early recognition and management of ACS, including appropriate disposition.
  • Discuss early recognition and management of stroke, including appropriate disposition.
  • Recognize bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
  • Perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
  • Recognize cardiac arrest.
  • Perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care.
  • Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team.
  • Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient's physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team.
  • Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  • Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes.
  • Define systems of care.
  • Discuss the application of ACLS to the obstetric patient and identify considerations necessary for this population.
  • Identify physiological differences in the obstetric patient.

Refund Policy

Blank Children's Hospital reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather. In this event, you will be notified and your entire registration fee refunded.

Cancellation Policy:
