”We believe all professionals caring for trauma patients should have a solid baseline level of expertise in disaster response and preparedness, because a “business as usual” strategy is simply not possible and is doomed to failure” ~ Ronald M. Stewart, American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma

Disaster Management Emergency Preparedness course created by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Disaster Subcommittee is being presented by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines and Iowa Department of Public Health as a one-day course. Registration is required as there is a strict student to instructor ratio that needs to be maintained.

Major topics addressed include planning, triage, incident command, injury patterns and pathophysiology, and consideration for special populations. Small group discussions are based on illustrative scenarios. The course requires a pretest which will be emailed to you, and a post test which will be conducted after course conclusion.

Target Audience

The intended audience includes acute care providers (i.e., surgeons; anesthesiologists; emergency medicine physicians; emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, and trauma nurses; and prehospital professionals) who will most likely be the first receivers of casualties following major disasters. Other health care providers, administrators, public health personnel, and emergency preparedness managers/personnel are also encouraged to attend.
