Patient receives a surprise from family and hospital
On Easter Sunday, Elnora Day, 94 years old, was admitted to Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC). As a woman who loved and always coordinated an Easter Egg Hunt for her family, Day was disappointed she wouldn’t be able to celebrate one of her favorite holidays.
Low and behold, her family decided to bring the Easter Egg hunt to her. When Day’s family came to visit her in the hospital, they asked JRMC team members to close Day’s window shades while they “hid” Easter eggs outside her room on the lawn. “The team was on board to help so I called my children to bring the grandkids out. Staff was wonderful,” said Day’s daughter, Nancy.
“When the shade was raised, mom was so surprised and happy to see the Shaffer great-grandchildren: Jacob, Johanna, and Rhett, scurrying around the lawn gathering colorful eggs and small gifts,” recalls Nancy. “My husband, children, grandchildren, and I enjoyed this so much. Our children and grandchildren commented that other patients and families came close to their own room windows so they could be seen waving at the egg hunters. Everyone smiled and gave a thumbs up! We could not have pulled this off without the JRMC staff.”
“Emotionally it was hard for her to be in the hospital during this holiday, but this surprise along with being able to share the Easter meal with other family members brightened her day. Mom commented many times how caring every staff member was. She found comfort being taken care of by people she had a connection with through the Anamosa and Jones County area. We (her children) appreciated that every department member always took time to have a personal conversation with mom each time they stepped in her room. It’s the caring staff that makes the difference between JRMC and other facilities. Thank you for taking such good care of our mom.”
