As a member of the UnityPoint Health information technology team, Terri Lawler hears and sees the impact of positive patient experience daily. But, when her husband recently experienced a stroke, she and her family found themselves learning first-hand the power of true coordinated care.
“Working in health care, none of us ever plan to be on the patient side of the fence,” Lawler says. “At 46-years-old, you never expect anything like a stroke, but that’s what we were facing with my husband.”
Between two UnityPoint Health affiliates, Dubuque and Meriter, the Lawler family was surrounded with care. Upon arriving at Finley Hospital, they met with acute care, emergency department and radiology teams, as well as intensive care unit (ICU) staff, including respiratory therapy and the case manager.
“All of these teams advocated for my husband and our entire family. I never once felt his best interest was not the focus,” Lawler says.
Because of her husband’s age and the possibility of more complications, providers recommended transferring the Lawlers to another facility for more advanced care. UnityPoint Health – Meriter was strongly suggested, and soon, the Lawlers were on their way north.
“Having not ever stepped foot in our Meriter facility, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the moment we arrived until we were discharged, every single person on our care team was amazing,” Lawler says.
With all UnityPoint Health locations on the same electronic health record platform, the care Lawler’s husband received in Dubuque was readily available for the Meriter team, allowing them to immediately keep his care moving, saving time on admission and quickly getting to treatment.
“I’ve never felt so proud and honored to be part of such a large organization that truly works together. As employees, we know the mission of Best Outcome Every Patient Every Time, but as the wife of a UnityPoint Health patient, we fully experienced the truth and the commitment behind these words. We can’t say thank you enough,” Lawler says.
