At Norma Schmoker Cancer Center, we partner with you to fight cancer and provide personalized treatment plans to help you heal. Our expert care team uses specialized care and compassion to help you during and after treatment. Because we are part of Trinity Regional Medical Center, our team is able to coordinate your care between departments to meet your needs. Our comprehensive cancer program focuses on providing the best care and support for all of our patients.
Norma Schmoker Cancer Center is an approved cancer program through the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (CoC). A CoC-approved program ensures quality, multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer care in health care settings. These programs are concerned with prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation and end-of-life care.
Treatment Options
The experts at Norma Schmoker Cancer Center create a customized treatment plan to meet your needs, using the latest techniques and technology. Your treatment plan not only provides care, but also empowers you for the road ahead. Some treatment options your cancer team may use include:
- Surgery: Surgically removing the tumor and nearby tissue.
- Chemotherapy: Powerful drugs used to target and destroy cancer cells.
- Radiation Therapy: High-energy beams of radiation used to target and destroy cancer cells.
- Pain Management: Cancer and cancer treatment can cause pain, which is why we offer pain management therapies through UnityPoint Health – Trinity Pain Management Center.
True Beam Linear Accelerator
The True Beam Linear Accelerator offers several new technologies to help address some of the most significant barriers to individuals accessing timely and quality lifesaving radiation treatments.
- Provides four types of radiation: conventional, IMRT, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), one dose radiation to the head and neck, and and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
- Reduces some breast, lung and prostate cancer treatments from 30-40 treatments to 3-5 treatments
- Offers additional treatment options for a variety of cancers
- Causes less damage to nearby healthy cells with increased precision
- Treatments can be completed in 60% less time
Cancer Support and Resources
There are many phases of cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up during recovery. Throughout your journey, our care coordination team will act as an advocate for your best interests. The care coordination team provides the following services:
- Arranges any necessary cancer support services
- Helps manage appointments for treatment and services
- Helps you transition between one phase of care to the next
- Improves communication with the healthcare team
- Offers confidential counseling and assistance with financial matters if you need it
During your treatment you may need to have some of your care in the inpatient cancer unit at Trinity Regional Medical Center. In our inpatient cancer unit, our cancer providers continually monitor your care and review your treatment plan. Inpatient nurses are specially trained in oncology care and cancer treatment.
Outpatient services take place in the Infusion Center. The Infusion Center provides care to patients receiving:
- Blood products
- Chemotherapy
- Infusions
- Symptom management
The Cancer Registry is an integral part of the cancer program. The purpose of the Cancer Registry is to ensure that patients with cancer receive quality care and the resources they need to help manage their disease. All data we collect remains confidential.
We record information such as:
- Demographics
- Medical history
- Diagnostic studies
- Treatment information
- Follow-up information
We use collected information to:
- Help physicians analyze treatment results
- Provide optimum care for each patient
- Ensure that patients receive lifetime follow-up care
- Better understand cancer so that we can continuously improve the care we offer
- Create community public health programs
As part of our cancer support services, rehabilitation plays an important role. As you recover from cancer treatment, you may have rehab to help you get stronger and get back to your day-to-day activities. Trinity rehabilitation team members work closely with your medical team to deliver the physical therapy, occupational therapy and lymphedema management you need.
Infusion Center
The Infusion Center was designed for patient comfort, privacy and convenience. To best accommodate our patients, the Infusion Center offers movable partitions and larger individual infusion stations. Patients can enjoy watching their own private flat screen televisions, or they have the option of opening the movable partition between the patient bays to visit with fellow patients.
The Infusion Center employs specially trained and certified chemotherapy nurses who are on-call 24 hours a day for patients on infusion pumps and antibiotic infusion pumps.

- Infusion medications
- Chemotherapy
- Blood transfusions
- Hydration
- Remicade
- IV antibiotics
- Immune Globulin or IVIG
- Injections
- IV solumedrol
- Port flushes
- PICC dressing changes
- Labs

High-Risk Breast Clinic
The High-Risk Breast Clinic at Norma Schmoker Cancer Center offers peace of mind for women at risk for breast cancer. The clinic is staffed by experienced, compassionate experts who provide customized recommendations for prevention and monitoring for patients at increased risk.
If you are at greater than normal risk for developing breast cancer, we can help. At the clinic, you will be provided an individual assessment, recommendations for prevention and innovative breast cancer care, all close to home!
