Trauma Services

Trauma, whether it be intentional or unintentional, is consistently one of the leading causes of death. Traumatic injuries are categorized as any physical injury that is caused by an external mechanism. Not every emergency department can handle every trauma. A trauma center is more than an emergency department offering a state-verified hospital facility capable of highly specialized treatment for the most critical injuries. Based in a hospital, a trauma center has dedicated considerable time, equipment and facilities to the care of severely injured patients. Nurses, physicians and ancillary hospital personnel are highly-skilled and trained in the emergency and trauma treatment of these patients.

Our Trauma Centers

Iowa Methodist Medical Center is verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma as a Level I Adult Trauma Center. Blank Children's Hospital is verified by the ACS as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Additionally, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Methodist West Hospital are verified by the State of Iowa as Level IV Adult Trauma Centers.

In order to be verified by the ACS the hospitals must meet specific national criteria and standards of care as recommended by the ACS.

Statewide Trauma System

With the goal of reducing injury deaths, improving patient outcomes and reducing medical care costs, the Iowa trauma system was established in 1995 through state legislation titled the Iowa Trauma System Care Development Act. The system was fully implemented statewide in January 2001. Features of the system include categorization and verification of each hospital in Iowa, training in advanced trauma life support, definition of triage protocol, and uniform data definition and collection.
