Syed Ejaz Husain, MD

Dr. S. Ejaz Husain received his medical degree with honors from Brown University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine and then went on to complete advanced training with a surgical fellowship in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive surgery.  Following his two-year fellowship, Dr. Husain was invited to stay on as faculty at Baylor College of Medicine where he taught Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgery.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners as well as a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, American College of Eye Surgeons, American Medical Association and the Iowa Medical Society. He is the recipient of the prestigious Paul Kayser scholarship awarded by the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology for Refractive Surgery. Dr. Husain has also achieved the highest level of distinction in his field as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Husain has been involved in laser vision correction since 1994. He has authored over twenty research articles in leading peer-reviewed medical journals.  He is certified to perform Custom LASIK, Custom Advanced Surface Ablation (Flap free laser vision correction) and is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Husain performs Refractive Surgery, Lifestyle Cataract Lens Surgery and Laser Vision Correction.


Valerie Kounkel, DO

Dr. Valerie Kounkel received her medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her internship at the Henry Ford Health System-Riverside Osteopathic Hospital in Trenton, MI and her residency in Ophthalmology at Ohio University-Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH.

Dr. Kounkel is a member of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology,  American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Osteopathic Association, the Polk County Medical Society and is a fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology. She is President of the Des Moines Ophthalmic Society and is also a clinical instructor for Des Moines University and the University of Iowa.

Dr. Kounkel has been performing laser vision correction and cataract surgery since 2000. She is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kounkel performs Cataract Surgery using new technology intraocular lenses, Laser Vision Correction and Glaucoma Laser Surgery.

Dr. Beth Amspaugh received her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center in Indianapolis, Indiana and her Ophthalmology Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Amspaugh is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She performs Cataract Surgery and Laser Glaucoma Surgery.


Elizabeth Brown, MD

Dr. Brown received her medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She completed an internship in Transitional Residency at the Latter Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah and her Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic.

Dr. Brown is a member of the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology, Polk County Medical Society and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Brown is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She performs Cataract Surgery, Laser Eye Surgery and Glaucoma Surgery.


Jeffrianne Young, MD

Dr. Jeffrianne Young received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Lahey Clinic in Boston, MA and completed her Ophthalmology Residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT.

Dr. Young is President of the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology,  a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is also a member of the Des Moines Ophthalmic Society, Women in Ophthalmology, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology leadership Development Program XIX, class of 2017.

Dr. Young is  board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She performs Cataract Surgery and Laser Glaucoma Surgery.
