The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is less invasive than Roux-en-Y surgery and allows for quicker recovery time than previously-used techniques. The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band enables patients to lose weight in a more natural manner over a longer period of time, thereby helping the body to become accustomed to healthier eating habits. This is the safest surgical weight loss option and has the advantage of being adjustable or reversible.
During the procedure, our surgeon uses laparoscopic techniques (using small incisions and long-shafted instruments during surgery rather than a large incision), to implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient's abdomen. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food the patient can eat. It also creates a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and the intestines. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food, which results in weight loss.
The LAP-BAND® system was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June 2001 and is used at bariatric surgery centers nationwide.
