In a heartbeat, you can have a detailed image of your heart; in less than five seconds, an image of your entire body. But while speed is important, safety is the key.
Your health is Iowa Methodist Medical Center's top priority. Our innovative Definition Flash CT scanner was designed specifically to create a healthier and more comfortable experience for you as a patient.
- The Flash is 20 to 40 times faster than conventional CTs. A whole body scan now only takes just under 5 seconds.
- Patients no longer need to hold their breath and there is no need for beta blockers during scans.
- The Flash provides a significant reduction in radiation dose. Unnecessary X-rays are blocked by automated shields and its X-CARE technology reduces the radiation dose on exposure-sensitive areas.
- Scans are faster for restless children, and there's no longer a need to sedate young patients
- Trauma patients can benefit when every second counts

Flash CT Reduces Children's Radiation Exposure
Parents and doctors alike know that children are not small adults. Their heart and respiratory rates are faster, their still-developing organs are more sensitive, and their active bodies are harder to keep still.
For physicians, capturing quality diagnostic images in the youngest of patients can prove challenging. Now, in the blink of an eye, UnityPoint Health - Des Moines's new Flash CT can generate high-definition images of the heart, brain, bones and tiny blood vessels quickly and safely - even in the wiggliest of children.
Every Dose Counts
Blank Children's Hospital follows specific procedures to reduce dose during CT exams to make exams as safe as possible for even the youngest of our patients. We follow the as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) radiation dose policy and also have pledged to the Image Gently™ campaign. An initiative by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, Image Gently's goal is to increase awareness of the opportunities to lower radiation dose in the imaging of children.
We chose the new Flash CT because it was designed to make CT exams healthier for patients, and it helps reduce radiation exposure. The Flash CT requires a reduced radiation dose than earlier CT systems required. It also has special features to protect organs and areas on the body that are more sensitive to radiation without loss of image quality.
More Peace of Mind for Parents
With the Flash's fastest speed, patients no longer have to hold their breath during an exam, and patients spend less time in the tube. The Flash can perform a whole-body exam in less than 4.7 seconds. The decreased scan time often eliminates the need for sedation - more good news for parents. On top of the Flash's dose reduction and speed, it also provides high-definition, detailed images that help physicians make a more confident diagnosis.
