Supportive/Palliative Care

What is Supportive/Palliative Care?

Supportive/Palliative Care is specialized medical care for people with serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms of the serious illness they have. The goal is to improve the quality of life for you and your family.

Who is on the Supportive/Palliative Care team?

Supportive/Palliative Care is provided by a team of nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, and other specialists who work with patient's other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Supportive/Palliative Care is appropriate at any age and any stage of a serious illness and can be provided together with curative treatment. We will work with you and your physicians to address any physical, psychosocial, emotional or spiritual concerns.

What do we do?

  • Help you and your family to understand your illness and treatment options
  • Reduce distressing symptoms of your medical condition
  • Improve quality of life for you and your family
  • Increased comfort, independence, and activity
  • Work with you, your family and your doctors to create a plan of care that meets your needs through all steps of your medical condition
  • Communicate this plan as you move through different health care settings

What are serious ongoing medical conditions?

Examples may include: advanced heart disease, lung disease, cancer, stroke with serious impairment, neurological disease, and kidney failure.

How is it different than Hospice Care?

Supportive/Palliative Care is a bridge between you and your family and your health care team. It is for any stage of a serious, ongoing medical condition. Hospice care is for individuals approaching the last stages of life.

Outpatient Supportive/Palliative Care

The Outpatient Palliative Care team provides services outside the hospital. Our team works with your doctor to determine where best to serve you. We see patients here at Jones Regional, in long term and assisted living facilities, in your doctor's office, or in your home based on your doctor's recommendation.

How can I request Supportive/Palliative Care?

Supportive/Palliative Care services are available by the request of your doctor, family or yourself.
